Hard to believe the shape was born from function. The only road-Porsche to have Ferrari-rivaling beauty IMO. R&T data sheet inside.

The only better Porsche is the 908.

(917 is a different thing).

Yes! With the 906 a close second.

Gorgeous car.

I also like the little acceleration and coasting chart.

Nice car indeed, but a wrong data sheet... ;-)

The car above may look like a 904 GTS but it’s the later model, derived from it.

It’s a 906 GTS, of which just 12 were made and only _ 6 _ survive today.

It takes a keen eye to spot differences between those two very similar cars:

1. 904 has a fuel cap at the right corner of the front hood. 906 GTS is centered on the hood.

2. 904 has sliding, rear-to-front door 1/2 window. Where as 906 GTS has a full roll up one.

3. 904 has a door that reaches clear under the car, with no door jam.. Where as 906 GTS has a ‘short’ door, in comparison.

4. 904 has small air scoops in the panel behind both doors. 906 GTS has large, elongated air scoops starting at the door edge.

5. 904 has a grill for the 904 engine cooling air intake across the back body section immediately after and in between those rear buttresses. 906 GTS, utilizing the 901 engine (the same as in early 911 road cars) with the cooling fan facing the fire wall, takes air from a sloping opening right behind the rear window. The no longer needed 904-style air intake still incorporated in rear body section, most interestingly, is capped close.

With over 100 each 904 GTSs produced, they too are pretty rare to see. However, seeing a 906 GTS, fits in to unicorn territory indeed...

906 Carrera6 is a very pretty car indeed. Albeit using virtually identical suspension from the 904/906GTS models, their chassis set them apart: 904/906GTS cars were constructed from large sections of thin sheet metal (not unlike current Lotus Elise/Exige platforms), where as 906 Carrera6 was again a tube frame chassis, as previous Porsche Spyders and subsequent 910, 908, 909, 917 and 936 models had as well.

And for only $7425, it's the cheap midengined sports car we've all been dreaming of!

That particular car (formerly Lord Laidlaw’s) has a fascinating backstory. Many years ago –while sporting a 4cyl/4cam engine– it was converted for the road by its then owner, Vern Covert. Cute mention of the Coverts’ Dobermann Pinscher, by the way...

Damn, almost forgot to add the link!

I first read about it around 1993, in a reprint compilation of Panoramas’ issues. When I saw Laidlaw’s cars many years later I had no idea it was indeed the same 904!

Interestingly it seems it was first going to be fitted with a flat-eight.
